Office Technology

Mrs. Denise Carrier

Here we learn practical skills that can prepare us for a Business Administration major at a college or university, for office related jobs in just about any business, or for starting our own business. We also practice our skills by doing all kinds of jobs within the school that are generated by other teachers, staff, and students.

School Newspaper

The junior class is the assigned staff for the school newspaper. Integrated with our other shop work, we lay out, put together, and publish a new issue each trimester. Inside Pathfinder is student-driven, containing twelve pages of articles written and edited by students and staff. There are regular feature sections such as Editorials, Sports, Guidance News, and the back page which is dedicated to Community News. If you like journalism, you'll enjoy this part of shop. Web Page Design

We learn to design web pages as a part of practical business practice. Just about every business in today's world has a web page and uses it as an important business tool.

We also design our Senior Portfolios in a web page format and burn the portfolio to a CD that we take with us after we graduate. It's a great tool to have for applying for admission to a college or applying for a job.

Webquests

We use the Internet for a lot of online projects called webquests. Webquests are real life scenarios that are set up for you with clear, easy step-by-step instructions, hyperlinks to get your research material, and even a rubric to show you how you'll be graded on the project. We use a website where teachers from all over the country share their webquests for anyone to use.

The Microsoft Suite

Of course we learn a lot about the Microsoft Office programs. We do textbook work and projects using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Some of the projects we work on using these computer applications are:

  • Research the Titanic disaster (write essay, PowerPoint show, analyze data)
  • Creating a tri-fold brochure on a career
  • Buying our first car (learning about interest rates, financing, loan terms, etc.)
  • Planning our first household budget (estimating monthly living expenses)
  • Create a database of possible employers and send out resume and cover letter
  • Research and promote a college or university (in PowerPoint)

The Adobe Suite

In junior and senior year we begin learning to work with Adobe software using PhotoShop and InDesign. In PhotoShop we learn how to manipulate picture files so that we can use them in other applications. InDesign is a layout software used for a lot of the same things Microsoft Publisher is used for, but it is much more powerful.

The Adobe programs are widely used in the field of graphic design, and many of our students have interests in that area. Getting familiar with the Adobe Suite gives us the advantage of knowing more than one brand of computer software and makes us qualified for a wider range of jobs when we graduate.

Graphics in Business

Graphics or graphic design is an integral part of the world of business. Good design catches the eye of the consumer and sells a product or service. We learn about the psychology behind colors, shapes, fonts, and combinations of these things to create business graphics. We learn how to design logos, letterhead, monograms, wordmarks, and ligatures all aimed at selling a product or service to a specific target market.
